Participation of women in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) has remained low globally despite initiatives geared towards supporting greater engagement of women especially in research for development. Even with a higher proportion of women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), women are under-represented in key areas of STI. This could be attributed to – among other reasons – policy, institutional, and personal factors. While many SSA countries have gender sensitive STI policies that aim at promoting the participation of women in STI at all levels, these are rarely implemented.
In October 2018, Busitema University won a competitive grant from the Islamic Development Bank for project entitled “Strengthening Capacity of the Forum for African Women Vice Chancellors (FAWoVC) to Promote Gender Inclusive Participation in Science, Technology and Innovation” in three countries namely; Mozambique, Uganda and Sudan. The project will be championed by senior academics and private sector leaders. One of the specific objectives of the project is to to develop and implement a mentorship program for emerging females academics in Sudan, Mozambique and Uganda to increase their participation in STI. Strategic and operational plans for mentoring female academics will be developed, University leaders will provide a model for inspiring and motivating female students and scientists to take leadership in STI.
Purpose, Objectives and Strategy for mentorship program
The purpose of this program is to provide mechanisms for attracting and retaining through mentorship more female scientists in STI fields. The program aims at mobilizing female university leaders in the African continent to mentor and support more female academics to grow and sustain their careers.
The overall objective of the planned mentoring program is to enable the mentees to develop their own skills, strategies and capability to tackle the next career hurdle more effectively with or without the mentor’s presence.
Monitoring will be undertaken to make sure that the program stays on track and that it is meeting its goals. A monitoring tool will be developed for this purpose. Specific information to be collected and documented to monitor the success of the program include mentor and mentee applications, agreements, program participation logs, attendance and participation records and action plans.
Thematic Areas of Strategic Priorities
In order to achieve the purpose of this program, the following thematic areas were identified and developed: Onboarding, Skills Enhancement, Professional Identity, Career Development, Leadership and Management Development, Education Support, in addition to Knowledge Management and Transfer.
FAWoVC Mentorship program is targeted toward Sudanese females who are currently involved in Higher Education or Research Institutes in Sudan, working in any STI disciplines.
Applicants should fulfill the following criteria:
- Have obtained at least a Bachelor degree in Any of STI disciplines (Agriculture, Science, Medical Sciences, Engineering, Information Communication and Technology, Mathematics or other relevant areas).
- Be less than 35 years of age by the end of Dec 2021.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to working in STI disciplines.
- Prove a document of job placement upon successful completion and expected return to any of above institutions or program.
