Establishment Date: The Faculty of Media (Communication Sciences) was established in Sudan in 1994, when the establishment of the Faculty of Communication Sciences at Al-Jazeera University was approved. Among the founders of the faculty were Professor Dr. Al-Tijani Hassan Al-Amin (former Director of Al-Jazeera University) and Professor Sheikh Al-Aqib Haj Idris, the first Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences. Studies began on May 17, 1995, for undergraduate students, making it the first independent faculty of communication sciences and arts in Sudan.

Considering the name of this faculty, we find that the study of communication and media sciences is the foundation upon which its establishment rests. We all know that communication today shapes and enables all aspects and dimensions of the state. Therefore, communication media has been at the forefront of intellectual and cultural invasion. In order for the state’s communication media to fulfill its mission to the fullest extent through harmony between communication and media sciences, Al-Jazeera University established the Faculty of Communication Sciences.

In accordance with this principle, Al-Jazeera University established the Faculty of Communication Sciences. The prestigious University of Gezira, with its long and distinguished academic history, is considered a leading university in Sudan in terms of its effective utilization of available resources to achieve both quantitative and qualitative growth. It is also the first university in Sudan to establish a strong connection with rural areas, having created a significant number of colleges in these regions. The establishment of the College of Communication Sciences was a direct response to the community’s urgent need for media specialists who could guide communication to serve the nation’s causes. The college was founded following a consultative meeting held by the Islamic Call Organization in 1993. Among the objectives set by the meeting were the training of students, their connection to the community, and their familiarity with modern communication technologies.

The college’s most distinctive feature is its comprehensive curriculum and its treatment of communication as a distinct and important field of study. The relatively recent name of the college also played a role in attracting students. The first graduating class, the 17th cohort, graduated in 1999, and subsequent classes have consistently demonstrated remarkable excellence in various fields.

Following its development and modernization, the Faculty of Media aims to be a unique platform for building media skills among its students and graduates. This is achieved through a comprehensive curriculum and training program designed to cultivate well-rounded media personalities. The program is founded on continuous development and the integration of practical skills and knowledge, placing students in a hands-on work environment from their very first years at the faculty. The faculty provides experts and trainers who offer a diverse and comprehensive range of training in various media skills, delivered alongside the academic curriculum. This fosters in students from the outset an understanding that media work is not merely a theoretical exercise or a traditional curriculum, but rather, in accordance with the latest global media education systems, a skills-based educational framework grounded in professional practice and grounded in a clear educational vision and ethical framework.

Thus, students receive training from their very first day at the college, and their professional skills are continuously developed to ensure they are well-prepared, competitive, and have priority access to the Sudanese, regional, and international job markets, meeting their demands. In addition to the well-known media specializations offered in radio, television, journalism, public relations, advertising, and multimedia, media education and training also provide opportunities to learn about the latest developments in online media, social media platforms, and interactive media applications for smartphones.

The college offers a diverse training environment that utilizes modern studios and laboratories, and draws on specialized expertise to place students in a professional media education and training environment. This aligns with the national strategy and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s emphasis on making employment indicators a key determinant in media education and training programs.
