Department of Histopathology and Cytopathology
Department Overview
The Department of Histopathology and Cytology is one of the important academic and specialized departments within the College of Medical Laboratory Sciences. The department focuses on the study of the normal and pathological structure of tissues and cells, the mechanisms underlying pathological changes, and the laboratory techniques used in their diagnosis
The department is committed to preparing and qualifying scientifically and professionally competent medical laboratory scientists in the field of histopathology and cytopathology . Students are trained in the proper handling of tissue and cellular specimens, including specimen collection, fixation, processing, sectioning, staining, microscopic examination, and the recognition of pathological changes.
The department also contributes to the advancement of medical diagnosis and scientific research through the promotion of modern histopathological and cytological techniques, particularly in the diagnosis of tumors, cellular abnormalities, and pathological tissue changes. All educational, practical, and research activities are conducted in accordance with professional standards, quality assurance principles, laboratory safety requirements, and medical ethics.
Vision
To achieve excellence and leadership in education, practical training, and scientific research in the fields of histopathology and cytopathology , while preparing highly qualified medical laboratory professionals capable of adopting modern scientific and technological advances and contributing effectively to healthcare and community service.
Mission
To provide high-quality academic education and practical training in histopathology and cytopathology , and to prepare graduates with comprehensive scientific knowledge, technical competence, critical thinking, and research skills that enable them to contribute effectively to medical diagnosis, scientific research, and community service.
Objectives
- To provide comprehensive academic education in normal and pathological histology and cytology.
- To equip students with the scientific knowledge and practical skills required for the proper handling and processing of tissue and cellular specimens.
- To train students in tissue and cytological preparation techniques, including fixation, processing, sectioning, staining, and microscopic examination.
- To develop students’ ability to recognize pathological changes in tissues and cells and relate these changes to the underlying disease processes.
- To enhance students’ competence in microscopic examination and the preliminary interpretation of histopathological and cytological findings within the scope of medical laboratory science practice.
- To promote the use of modern technologies and advanced techniques in histopathological and cytological diagnosis.
- To establish and promote the principles of quality assurance, quality control, biosafety, and occupational safety in histopathology and cytology laboratories.
- To encourage scientific research and applied studies in the fields of histopathology, cytology, and laboratory-based disease diagnosis.
- To strengthen academic and scientific collaboration with relevant academic departments, healthcare institutions, and research centers.
- To prepare graduates who are competent and capable of working efficiently in diagnostic laboratories, hospitals, healthcare institutions, and research centers.
- To develop students’ critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and commitment to lifelong learning.
- To contribute to community service by promoting awareness of the importance of early diagnosis, particularly in tumors, cellular abnormalities, and other pathological conditions.
