Department of Horticultural Sciences
Vision:
To promote the horticultural sector in Sudan for various crops (medicinal and aromatic, fruits, ornamental plants, and vegetables).
Mission:
To train undergraduate and postgraduate students to advance horticultural production in Sudan.
Objectives:
– To develop horticultural production.
– To train qualified personnel at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels to advance horticultural production.
– To conduct research in the following areas:
• Vegetable production, including the development of new varieties and their introduction.
• Fruit production, including production development, the introduction of new varieties, and variety improvement.
• Production and utilization of medicinal and aromatic plants.
• The use of tissue culture techniques in horticultural plant production.
• Post-harvest handling.
• Biotechnology.
– To focus on developing extension services in the horticultural sector and promoting publications to support farmers and those working in horticultural production.
– To train teaching staff.
– To develop horticultural production in the region.
Ongoing Research:
1) Fruit: Propagation, importation of varieties from abroad.
2) Ornamental: Propagation of certain ornamental plants through tissue culture.
3) Medicinal and Aromatic: Study of extracts in various medicinal and aromatic plants.
4) Genetic Resources: Work on the licensing and conservation of certain vegetable varieties.
5) Post-Harvest Handling: For fruits (bananas, mangoes, etc.).
6) Biotechnology: Its use in combating certain viral diseases affecting some types of vegetables, as well as its application in various citrus fruits.
7) Vegetables: Development of new varieties.
