Work on establishing the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, began in 1999 to meet the dire need for this engineering specialization in the Gezira State, which hosts the largest agricultural scheme in Africa, which requires engineering departments for road building and other types engineering construction. Additionally, on a broader level, the engineering community in Sudan has suffered from a brain drain of engineering cadres. This has led to a clear shortage of engineering skills in various fields, making the Department of Civil Engineering an absolute necessity.
