The Vice Chancellor of the University of Gezira, Prof. Mohammed El-Sanousi Mohammed, praised the role of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University. He said – in his address to the teacher staff and students of the Faculty in their celebration of “Field Day” – which the Faculty of Agriculture supported the University of Gezira methodology with scientific research and worksheets. He pointed out that the existence of the Faculty of Agriculture serves the idea of the University in serving the community issues to benefit from the natural growth of agriculture as an alternative to pesticides, adding that this leads to reducing the cost, and works to preserve the environment and maintain human health and safety, calling for the implementation of these field researches to the reality. Prof. El-Sanousi, welcomed the proposal of the Member of the Council of Gezira Administration Project, Uz. Al-Zain Bakhit to establish a coordination body comprising University of Gezira, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Gezira Project, and the Corporation of Agricultural Research for the Integrated Research Program.
For his part, the Head of the Department of Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Gezira, Prof. Ahmed Al-Bashir, said that since 2012 we have been growing crops without using pesticides. He pointed out that the current experience of the PhD student at the Corporation of Agricultural Research, Entisar Ahmed, during the process, two cultivars were planted, which are (Hamed) and (R.R), the last one is an American origin, was imported by the Brazilian company for planting in a number of agricultural projects. Al-Bashir attributed the success of the crop to early planting since June 20, 2018 for (Hamed) cultivar and 20/7/2018 for the Brazilian cultivar. The planting distances ranged from 50-25-15 cm. The researcher at the Corporation of Agricultural Research, Dr. Abdul Aziz Yousef, pointed out that control of crops is considered the last line of defense in order to preserve natural enemies, confirming the intervention of the Corporation of Agricultural Research, in the case of existence of any pests. Pointing to the implementation of research programs for the soybean crops in field farmers’ school, for a distance of 3-4 cm.
A number of scientists and researchers who participated in the Field Day program made their observations and presented their scientific proposals on the experience of the cotton crop which applied to the experimental farm of University of Gezira in the University City (Nisheishiba). The delegation had examined the experience of M.Sc. student Malaz Ahmed Dafallah by planting 13 varieties of sweet cowpea, which are excellent varieties and achieved high germination results.
